The Ist International Conference “(Dis)Memory of disaster” was held at Funchal (Madeira island -Portugal), from October 18th to 19th, 2013, hosted by Universidade da Madeira (Centro de Estudos Regionais e Locais) in cooperation with Centro de Estudos de Comunicação e Cultura of Universidade Católica Portuguesa.
Madeira island has a long and complex history of natural disasters. The Ist International Conference “(Dis)Memory of disaster” constituted a space for both academic and civic debate and to question the implications between memory, perceptions of danger, risk management and the experience of disasters both in Madeira island and in other diverse geo-cultural contexts.
The Ist International Conference “(Dis)Memory of disaster” was a meeting organized by the research project “(Dis)Memory of disaster? Culture and natural hazards, catastrophe and resilience. Madeira island, a case study”*, supported by both the Centro de Estudos de Comunicação e Cultura of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa (Lisbon) and the Centro de Investigação em Estudos Regionais e Locais of the Universidade da Madeira (Funchal).

The conference took place at the University of Madeira (campus of Penteada, located in the periphery of Funchal).
